Government of New Brunswick
Incident Command System (ICS)

The Incident Command System is a standardized, on scene, all hazard incident management concept. ICS allows its’ users to adopt an integrated organizational structure to match the complexities and demands of single or multiple incidents without being hindered by jurisdictional or political boundaries.

ICS has considerable internal flexibility. It can grow or shrink to meet different needs. This flexibility makes it a very cost effective and efficient management approach for both small and large situations.

ICS is a proven management system built on best practices and is the result of decades of lessons learned in the organization and management of emergency incidents and planned events. ICS has been tested in more than 30 years of application, by all levels of Government and in the private sector.

Through the use of best practices ICS helps to ensure:

  • The safety of responders and others.
  • The achievement of tactical objectives.
  • The efficient use of resources.

In New Brunswick, NB EMO is the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).  As such, NB EMO is responsible to grant access to the online version of the I-100 course, certify instructors, conduct quality assurance of the training being delivered in the province, and participate in ICS Canada meetings and conferences.

ICS Canada’s governing document is called “Incident Command System Student, Training and Training Provider Standards” and can be found on their website at www.icscanada.ca.
