Location Grant for Physician and Grant for Specialists in Designated Fields
The Location Grant for Physician and Grant for Specialists in Designated Fields Program provide grants of $20,000 to Family Practitioners who meet the eligibility criteria and establish a community based practice as well as to Specialists in designated fields.
Family Practitioners and Specialists in designated fields who agree to sign a mandatory two year return-of-service agreement to New Brunswick are eligible to receive a grant of $20,000.
Family Practitioners must establish a community based practice.
Specialists are also eligible providing that their specialty is one of the designated hard-to-recruit specialties: Anaesthesia, General Internal Medicine; Medical Oncology, Neurology, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Vascular Surgery;
Other specialties may be considered if a position has been vacant for more than 12 months. The eligible specialties are reviewed annually.
Physicians who have previously practiced in New Brunswick must have moved out-of-province permanently for a minimum of one year before being considered for a location grant or a grant for specialists in designated fields. Physicians relocating from one region to another are not eligible for this grant.
Physicians are not eligible to receive the location grant or the grant for specialists in designated fields more than once during their career even if they have moved out of the province for one year or more.
Physicians who received a bursary during their last two years of residency will not be eligible to receive the location grant or the grant for specialists in designated fields.
Physicians are required to sign a two year return-of-service agreement with the respective RHA and establish a full time community based practice within 6 months of receiving the grant or completing their residency training.
Recipients of the grant are also obligated to take patients from the orphan patient registry when applicable.
The Regional Health Authorities will submit the grant request on your behalf, once you have signed a return-of-service agreement and have met the eligibility criteria. For all requests, approval is required from this department prior to offering a grant.
A maximum number of grants is determined annually and is based on the budget allocation of the program.
