When an existing town, village, regional municipality, rural community or local service district changes its structure to become a larger or new local government, it is known as community restructuring.
Restructuring is undertaken for a number of reasons but is generally done to create greater capacity and opportunity locally, to better serve the needs of residents, businesses and organizations.
| Restructuring Spotlight The local service district of Hanwell went through the community restructuring process. Following research, public consultation, and a plebiscite in December 2013, area residents voted to become a new local government, the rural community of Hanwell, to have greater control over local affairs.
