FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny on the 10th anniversary of the accident that claimed the lives of seven members of the Bathurst High School boys basketball team and a teacher:

Today marks a solemn anniversary in the history of our province.

As a resident of Bathurst and graduate of Bathurst High School myself, I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn that eight lives were taken well before their time in such a tragic way.

Just after midnight on Jan. 12, 2008, countless lives were forever changed when a van carrying the Bathurst High School boys basketball team, and others, was involved in a fatal collision.

We will never forget Javier Acevedo, Codey Branch, Nathan Cleland, Justin Cormier, Daniel Hains, Nicholas Kelly, Nickolas Quinn and teacher Beth Lord.

Today I am thinking of the “Boys in Red” and Beth, as well as their families and friends.

So many lives across the country were touched by this accident, and I ask that you join me in taking some time today to reflect and pay respect in your own way to the victims and all others affected.
