The College of Physicians and Surgeons has the primary responsibility for the licensing of New Brunswick physicians, monitoring physician practices and investigating when a patient files a complaint against a physician.
To obtain a Medicare number and obtain privileges at one of the Regional Health Authorities, you must be licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and a member of the New Brunswick Medical Society.
If you are a foreign-trained physician, you may be able to get a license under section 26 of the Medical Act. Please contact the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick at (506) 849-5050.
You will also need to obtain a sponsorship from one of the Regional Health Authorities and approval from the Department of Health.
If you are not a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant, the RHA will initiate contact with Immigration Canada. A number of processes are involved at this stage and it may take up to six months before a visa will be issued.
